The Griqualand West Rugby Football Union was established in 1886 as one of the first provincial unions in order to better facilitate the non-racial rugby. GW played a major role in the development of rugby and sport in South Africa. Many teams were affiliated to the GWRFU including Violets, Progress, Universal RFC - the oldest surviving club in Kimberley, Arabian College RFC, Thistle RFC, Young Lions RFC, Assmang, Young Collegians RFC, All Backs RFC, Red Eagles, William Pescod High, Floors High, Homevale SSS, the Kimberley Primary Schools Sports Union, the Kimberley Senior Schools Sports Union. Drafting players for GW selection initially inlcuded the North West Cape.
